Book Publishing | Brisbane & Gold Coast |Australia and beyond
The book publishing industry has changed. In this new digital era, writing and publishing has never been easier. Do-It-Yourself self-publishing websites like Lulu, Ingram and Amazon have made it even more achievable to bring your story to life. Where on the other end of the scale, gaining a traditional publishing contract with a top publishing house has become even harder.
This has opened a myriad of options that fill the gap between DIY self-publishing and trade publishing. These various hybrid models have brought even more offerings to the table making it a much larger list of potential publishers you may choose to work with.
Ocean Reeve Publishing has stayed on top of the industry trends and have ensured that we offer all options to the potential and established author. No matter if the desired vision is within self-publishing, hybrid or traditional – we have it covered.
We are always looking at ways to provide the full range of services and offerings to authors. Primarily, Ocean Reeve Publishing is an Assisted Independent Publishing company where we focus on a set and proven method to publish, offer firm sale distribution options and hands-on marketing support.
However, we are fully aware that this process does not suit every author. We are also aware that the DIY model often deters authors as they would prefer to work with companies in their own backyard, or at least a company they can call or visit. You may wish to work with a company who specialises on self-publishing in Brisbane, a hybrid publisher in Sydney or a traditional publisher in Melbourne. For us, as an assisted independent and self-publisher in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, we can still meet the varying needs of any author.
Let’s explore the differences in each of the options available and examine the definition of self-publishing, assisted independent publishing and trade publishing.
Assisted Independent Publishing | Brisbane | Australia | International
This model is very similar to the hybrid publishing model – a cross between traditional and self-publishing. As an assisted independent publisher, we ensure the final book is as polished and professional as possible. Not to be confused with “vanity publishing,” assisted independent or hybrid publishers will not accept just any manuscript or author. The following information will give you guidance towards each of the three options; trade publishing, assisted independent and self-publishing from our Brisbane and Gold Cost offices.
In the assisted independent model…
- Requires a financial investment from the author
- Authors maintain 100% rights
- Authors have input into editing and design
- Editors and Designers professionally trained and qualified
- Personalised Marketing Support
- Firm-Sale Book Distribution in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, and the UK.
We provide professional editing services that are more in line with the trade publishing process. Our editorial process within Assisted Independent Publishing includes a light structural edit and review, copy-edit and review, along with a post-format proofread. That means there are three editors who will be reviewing your book to ensure it is as error-free as possible. To learn more and review our options and process within the editorial department … click here.
Our typesetting and book cover designs are all of a trade standard and do not deviate from the quality control needed for the retail market to take our publications seriously. We produce our books to industry-standard book sizes such as US Trade C-Format, Demy, and Crown Quarto. To review more about the book formatting process … click here or cover designs … click here.
In addition, we provide a Book Marketing Mentorship program that is focused on establishing your foundation as an author and successfully promoting your publication(s). The goal here is to not only make a return on your investment, but also to build a career as an author. To review the full outline of this program … click here.
Finally, Ocean Reeve Publishing has a strong distribution network where we promote our titles in our catalogue to distributors, suppliers, and retailers within the book-selling industry. Our immediate focus is Australia, New Zealand, and the United States; however, our network also spreads to Canada and the United Kingdom. In addition, royalties are split between author and publisher, but only on books that we sell. Any books you as an author sell are 100% yours. Ocean Reeve Publishing authors receive anywhere from 85% (if sold directly to a consumer through our website), to 40% (if sold in a retail avenue) of royalties. At Ocean Reeve Publishing, it’s our goal to bring stories to life that meet or exceed our authors’ expectations while positioning them to thrive in the marketplace. Our marketing efforts are custom-tailored to each book and we encourage our authors to be proactive in their marketing efforts.
Self-Publishing | Brisbane | Australia | International
There are distinctive differences between hybrid/assisted independent publishing and self-publishing. Like the above, there is a financial investment in the self-publishing process. Reviewing what we also mentioned above about editing and design, the self-published author has 100% total control over the editorial initiated and the look and feel of their book(s). Whilst this can be problematic in a promotional sense as it could mean sub-standard design and a high potential of editorial concerns, the final call on the standards of the book are the authors. Self-Publishing in Brisbane, or anywhere for that matter, requires a set of skills that stand out within the industry. We meet that standard.
In addition, the book marketing and promotion is generally solely in the hands of the author. We do not limit the Book Marketing Mentorship to only assisted independent authors and do offer it to self-published authors; however the ongoing support is less in this case. The largest difference between the two is the distribution network.
As a self-published author, Ocean Reeve Publishing would not include your title into our catalogues or promote through the ORP distribution network. Whilst it can still be made available through our print-on-demand network and be live on selling channels like Amazon, Booktopia, etc, we would not promote it to libraries, bookstores and distributors either here in Australia or overseas. Hence why we have set up Genesis Publishing – so you can still have the professional team working with you to develop a quality publication but also maintain total control over how your book is marketed and distributed.
Trade Publishing | Brisbane | Australia | International
What is trade publishing or traditional publishing? Simply put, it is when you as an author, have been offered a contract by a publishing house to write and publish through them. Often you can get paid an advance and through sales of the various formats (physical, eBook, audio) you will receive a royalty payment. This is a percentage of the sale price that is usually between 6-12% depending on the company and territory.
With this, you do have some restrictions in place. All publishing rights remain with the publisher and if at any stage you wish to purchase them back, it will likely cost. The decision on how the book is edited, designed and marketed is in the hands of the publisher.
Once released, if your book doesn’t crack that 0.01% success barrier, the publisher will move on from proactive marketing. This leaves the ongoing book marketing in your hands. Finally, the books you may wish to sell direct will need to be purchased from the publisher direct at usually 50% of the full retail price
Ocean Reeve Press is our trade publishing arm of the business. Once a year we run a manuscript competition for non-fiction authors writing inspirational biographies, personal or professional development manuscripts of self-help/how to. One winner is selected and offered a trade publishing contract. The above restrictions still exist but we give the authors first option on publishing rights after one year of release – at no cost, the percentage in sales is higher and we do offer better book purchasing prices to our authors.
Who Want’s To Live Forever?
Why Should You Publish A Book
#1 You Are Creative
The first and most obvious reason is that you are creative. Without a doubt, you are creative. Everyone is. It’s just that creative expression we had running through us as children was educated out of us. We became part of that mob mentality to fill a quota. Writing is freeing, cathartic, inspiring, exhilarating, and fulfilling. We all have a story, insight or education that we can share. For some of us, it’s more than one. The simple truth is that to become a writer, you just need to say, ‘I want to write a book’ and then write it. To become an author, you just need to say, ‘I want to publish my book’ and then publish it. To create a successful book, we need to promote, market and work with people that can support our vision and dream.
#2 Personal Growth
Another profound reason is the natural, introspective process that is writing. It helps us grow. For some people, it helps discover our purpose or reinvent our ‘why’. Through the writing process, we gain perspective of our true passion and why it matters so much to us. Moreover, it helps us connect with our values and motivations which is of incredible value to our own growth. Writing is also a learning experience. No matter what genre you are writing, you’re likely to undertake research during this process. As a result, this opens you up to new ideas and new ways of thinking. You’ll be energised by the lifelong learning component in writing. You will resurface as a published author with lessons to share. From that, many doors can open for you in speaking, interviews and other professional opportunities.
#3 Why Not?
Finally, why you should write? Why not? Life in the 21st Century has presented us with many obligations – kids, work, tax, bills, health, politics, security, equality, status, wellbeing. Let’s be honest, it’s monotonous, boring and frustrating. While certain elements of these do give us fulfilment, these obligations also produce suffering and pain. We tend to create a bubble around ourselves to protect us from the doubt and anxiety they can often cause. By doing so, we are restricting our possibilities.
Writing and then learning how to publish a book pops that bubble. We are taking action with something unfamiliar and yes, it can be scary, we get that. But, that’s why it’s also exciting. The only way you can grow as a person is by forcing yourself to leave your comfort zone. In the space of Assisted Independent Book Publishing, you are not alone in this adventure. Along with the publishing team, you are supported in your marketing and distribution. You can even organise a literary agent with us to further your dream.
Don’t you ever let a soul in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are.
Many years ago, the only answer to that question ‘how do I publish my book’ was to shoot for the stars and pitch to a traditional publisher. Or spend huge amounts of money to walk the vanity publishing road. Self-publishing developed and opened up a huge world of opportunity for aspiring authors to publish their work. There are many options to explore self-publishing in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, wider Australia and of course all over the world. But you need to be sure that the self-publishing company understands your vision and will work with you to achieve it – in publishing AND marketing.
However, with the market swamped by so many self-publishing companies, there were organisations and individuals who did not act in the best interests of vulnerable creatives looking to share their story. Corruption exists in every industry including the publishing industry. Many of these self-publishing companies bring no professional education or training to the table. There is also very little marketing support offered by self-publishing companies in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Australia or even internationally.
We must add that not all self-publishing houses in Brisbane, Australia or worldwide are unethical. In fact, some of the best self-publishing companies in Australia specifically, do offer quality services. However, like many industries, one bad apple and…well, you know the rest. This is where Assisted Independent Publishing enters the publishing industry. Above all, you are working with a team of highly trained, professionals to bring your writing to A+ class requirements. Above all, you are publishing a book with high industry standards, and market creatively with pride. Furthermore, it is now affordable and easy to implement.
How Do I Publish My Book?
When looking into how to publish your book, you need to accept it will cost time, money, resources, and people. Firstly, the time we can structure. Secondly, the people we can all on. Next, the resources needed tend to be already available. However, if there is no ROI in writing and publishing, we have to look at why we are doing it. At very least, we should aim to make our investment back. Once you commit those ideas flowing around inside you to paper, and then publish your book, can you actually earn income from Assisted Independent Publishing.
Remarkably, only a tiny percentage of the population will ever publish a book. So while it seems the book market is swamped, in fact, it’s not. It is just popular. By publishing your book, you will fit into the creative community. Consequently, you will also stand out as a creative individual who has published a unique book. Regardless of genre, the fact you are an author presents a level of authority and credibility towards your professional career. It matters. Books matter.
Creative Expression and Legacy in Book Publishing
Freddy Mercury said it best…’Who Wants To Live Forever?’. We can’t decide how long we will be here but we can decide on how well we’ll live while we’re here. By expressing ourselves creatively, authentically, with no barriers or social expectations, we can own who we are and our ‘why’. Through writing, we expose elements of ourselves we never thought we could. By then publishing, we can then offer it to the world for consumption, feedback, enjoyment, education, the list goes on. Long after we are gone, those publications will still be here and making an impact. Therefore, by publishing, we establish our legacy, and it is here to stay. So regardless of the publishing journey you take – self-publishing in Brisbane, assisted independent publishing in the Gold Coast or trade publishing in the USA, the time to publish is now!

So commit to your dream and reach out to make it a reality.

We have specialists who can mentor you through the writing process. This is regardless of whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, in whatever genre. The mentorship is structured through two face-to-face conference calls. Following that are a series of developmental critiques as you write. This is so you are supported through the process the entire time.
A decision towards your publishing vision needs to be made. If you desire to be Self-Publishing in Brisbane, Assisted Independently Publishing in the United States or Trade Published in the United Kingdom; make that call.
Introduction to Writing Mentoring
Regardless of location and choice of publishing model, firstly we set up a video conference call with you and establish what you want to write and your vision. Even if you are self-publishing in Brisbane or trade publishing in Asia, we discuss the outline, crafting of your story and set timelines. Then you are set two tasks to complete. Next, we review your submissions. We set up a second conference call where we discuss the homework and develop your writing structure and style. We also guide you through several developmental skills so you can begin the writing process.
From there, you are tasked to complete chapters in batches of two which are then structurally critiqued. These critiques dig deeper into your writing to ensure the fluidity, sentencing, and flow of the manuscript. It needs to be enticing, logical and connect with your reader. We continue this process until the end of the manuscript. Once approved, you then self-edit to ensure you have delivered your message or story that you aimed to deliver.
